10 Simple DIY Home Decor Ideas for Your Fixer-Upper – Pt 2

6) Get Creative with a Chalkboard Wall (Magnets are a Plus!)

Chalkboard paint is one of the coolest DIY trends of the last five years. With a few coats of this matte black (or green, or blue) paint, you can turn an entire wall or designated section into a dynamic chalkboard. Bust out the sidewalk chalk masterpieces or get some elegant chalk pens. Leave messages, draw a daily picture, or draft breathtaking temporary murals.

As a bonus, use magnetic paint primer with tiny iron dust particles in it to make your chalkboard wall hold magnets. This is a great way to create a permanent feature wall that will evolve with your home and household. Use an elegant all-mounted cup to hold liquid paint markers or a tray to hold decorative, useful, and organizational magnets.

7) Mount Clever Stairstep Floating Shelves

Floating shelves are a great DIY decoration project because you can add them anywhere and they can really stylize an empty wall. One of our favorites is stairstep floating shelves, which create an artistic shape across your wall – and can double as walkway for your cats.

Use masking tape or painter’s tape on your wall to map out where you want to hang the shelves and even what you will put there. Your floating shelf design could form a pattern, a maze, or abstract art that catches the eye. Don’t forget to consider what your shelves will look like with and without items placed on them.

8) Floating Shelves with Painted “Table Legs”

Mount a long floating shelf just below waist height, then paint antique table legs onto the wall below the shelf to create an optical illusion. This is a fun way to create an elegant surface without requiring any floor space at all, and is a fun trick for especially small rooms.

In fact, a floating shelf on your chalkboard wall gives you a fun way to draw a new table every day. Talk about flexible interior design.

9) Board-Mounted Mantel Decorations

Mounting boards make it easy to DIY new wall decorations without juggling multiple element placement each time.  Placing decor above your mantel can be especially difficult – if not for mounting boards. Use a board for backing when you design wall art and decorative signs so your pieces are easy to move around and safe to mount far above people’s heads.

10) Paint an Accent Closet

Last but not least, make your closets pop.  You’ve heard of an accent wall, but what about accent closets? Painting the inside of your closet a vivid accent color is a lot like shoes that have surprisingly colorful linings hidden inside. It’s fun, surprising, and brightens your day each time you see your color-popping closet.

You can paint the inside of your closet door to pop when the door is open or, as some do, you can paint the entire closet door a striking accent color as a promise of the vivid jewel box tones inside.

Sold a Roxborough home in 2017

"Trish is amazing! Trish was my agent when I bought my home in Philadelphia, so of course I went to her when I was ready to sell. Despite an election and the holidays, she was able to have my house sold by the time frame I needed to move. Trish was always helpful with guiding me through the  process of paperwork, staging my house, and even went to my closing for me because I was out of town. She was always professional and incredibly knowledgeable about the market, comps, and finding appropriate potential buyers."

Sold a Phoenixville home in 2015

"Trish Puleo exceeded my expectations during the process of selling a home that was part of an estate. Since I was out of state, she offered to check on items and secured vendors to fix some repairs that were needed. She is responsive, knowledgeable, and thorough. She followed up on all showings  and got answers to questions from potential buyers even when I did not know the answer. I felt she always had my back especially with the settlement process since I was not planning on attending. I would highly recommend making Trish your partner in getting a house sold."

"We were first time home buyers who underestimated the details of what on the surface seemed to be a standard, as in everyone has the same forms and procedures and ethics, home buying process. Trish is an experienced  professional who brought with her calm sensibilities, timely and accurate communication, and complete knowledge of the requirements, timelines and paperwork. She was reassuring, helpful and on our side when we needed it most! Only wish we would have included her the moment we decided to buy a house!"
